The Hardest-Working Fixture You Will Own

A handheld shower — a spray head on a flexible hose, docked in a holder — is the thing owners reach for constantly: rinsing shampoo without getting water in your eyes, washing the shower walls themselves, bathing kids, washing the dog, reaching your back. Ask anyone who has one and they will tell you it is the fixture they would never give up.

Mounting Options

Slide bar. The handheld docks on a vertical bar and slides to any height — great for households with big height differences, from kids to tall adults. This is the most versatile setup and the one we recommend most.

Fixed wall mount. A simple holder at a set height. Clean, minimal, lower cost. Fine when one or two people of similar height use the shower.

Diverter pairing. The best setups pair the handheld with a rain head or fixed head on a diverter valve — main head for normal showers, handheld for everything else, both at once when you want the full experience.

Hose and Finish Notes for Florida

Hose. Metal hoses last longer than plastic and do not kink as easily — worth the small upgrade. Look for a hose at least 60 inches long; short hoses are the number-one regret.

Hard water. Florida mineral buildup hits handheld nozzles like everything else. Silicone nozzles that wipe clean with a fingertip are the smart choice.

Salt air. Near the coast, stainless or solid-brass handhelds resist corrosion far better than plated zinc.

A handheld on a slide bar typically adds a few hundred dollars in fixture cost plus installation — one of the highest satisfaction-per-dollar upgrades in the bathroom. Call (407) 434-9297 for a free in-home estimate.

Handheld as Part of a System

The handheld earns its keep as part of a diverter system: main rain head for daily showers, handheld for rinsing, cleaning, and everything else. A two-way diverter is the simple version; a three-way adds body sprays to the mix for the full spa setup.

Placement of the holder matters more than people think. Too high and short users cannot reach it; too low and tall users stoop. The slide bar solves this permanently — which is why it is our default recommendation.

Water-saving note: because a handheld puts water exactly where you want it, most people actually use less water than with a fixed head they stand under passively. It is one of the few bathroom upgrades that improves the experience and trims the water bill at the same time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you add a handheld to my existing shower?

Usually, yes — and it is one of the simpler upgrades. If your valve has an available outlet or we add a diverter, the handheld mounts on the wall with minimal work. No tile demolition in most cases.

What is the best height for a handheld holder?

A slide bar solves this — it adjusts from about 36 to 72 inches, so everyone from kids to tall adults gets their height. For a fixed mount, we set it around chest height of the primary user.

Do handheld showers have good water pressure?

Yes — they run on the same supply as your main head, and many people find the focused spray feels stronger than a wide rain head. Multi-function models let you switch between gentle rinse and concentrated spray.

How long should the hose be?

At least 60 inches. Shorter hoses fight you when rinsing the far wall or washing a pet. A 72-inch metal hose is the sweet spot for most showers.
