The two products
You've seen the ads: "New shower in one day!" Companies like Bath Fitter and Re-Bath install acrylic overlays — factory-made panels fitted over your existing tub or shower. We're custom tile builders — we demo to the studs and build fresh. These aren't two versions of the same thing. They're different products for different situations.
One-day acrylic: the honest pros and cons
Pros: Done in a day or two. Costs less — typically $4,000–$8,000 in Florida. No grout to clean. Minimal disruption to your life.
Cons: It's a cover-up, not a rebuild. Whatever's behind your old shower — water damage, mold, bad plumbing — stays behind it, sealed in. Limited sizes and styles from a catalog. Can look and feel plasticky. Panels can flex over time, breaking caulk seals. Difficult to repair — usually full replacement when something goes wrong.
The question nobody asks: if your old shower was worth covering up, what's wrong underneath it? An overlay doesn't fix problems. It hides them.
Custom tile: the honest pros and cons
Pros: Built from scratch — every problem behind the walls gets found and fixed. Unlimited design. Proper waterproofing throughout. Lasts 20–30+ years. Adds more home value. Feels solid and premium.
Cons: Costs more ($12,000–$18,000+ typical). Takes 1–2 weeks. You'll be without that bathroom during the work.
When one-day makes sense
We're tile builders, but we'll be straight with you — the one-day product has legitimate uses:
- Rental property. Fast turnover, budget matters, tenants aren't picky about grout lines.
- Selling soon. A fresh-looking shower for listing photos at half the cost of tile.
- Budget is the hard constraint. A clean acrylic shower beats a rotting tile one.
- Someone needs a safer shower fast. When time matters more than anything, speed wins.
When custom tile wins
- Your long-term home. Amortized over 20 years, the cost difference shrinks and the daily experience difference doesn't.
- You suspect problems behind the walls. Musty smell, soft drywall, old plumbing — these need fixing, not covering.
- Design matters to you. If you'll look at this shower every morning for a decade, get the one you actually want.
- Resale value matters. Buyers and appraisers consistently value tile over acrylic.
The middle path nobody advertises
There's a third option: a semi-custom tile shower — standard layout, quality tile, framed or semi-frameless glass instead of full frameless. You get real tile construction and proper waterproofing at a meaningful discount from the full-custom price. Ask us about it — it's the best value in shower remodeling that nobody talks about.
