What Body Sprays Are
Body sprays are small jets set into the shower walls — usually two to four per side — that spray horizontally while your main shower head works from above. Turn everything on at once and water hits you from every direction. It is the feature that makes guests say "whoa" and the one owners use every single day.
What They Demand (the Honest Part)
Body sprays are a plumbing project, not a fixture swap. Here is what they actually require:
Water supply. Four body sprays plus a rain head can demand far more water than a standard half-inch shower supply delivers. Most body-spray systems need a 3/4-inch supply line and sometimes a dedicated volume control. We size the plumbing to the system — undersupplied sprays just dribble, which is the most common disappointment we fix from other installers' work.
Hot water. More water per minute means your water heater works harder. A standard 40-gallon tank can run out mid-shower with everything blasting. We talk through your heater capacity before we design the system — sometimes a thermostatic mixing valve and realistic expectations are the answer, sometimes it is a heater upgrade.
Drainage. All that water has to leave. The drain and pan slope must handle the peak flow, or you are standing in an inch of water. We verify drain capacity as part of the design.
Design and Cost
Sprays come in round and square trims to match your main fixtures. Placement matters — we set them at torso height, angled slightly, so they hit you and not the glass door. A thermostatic valve (see our thermostatic valve page) is the right control for a multi-outlet system because it holds temperature steady when outlets switch.
As a rough guide from published sources, adding body sprays to a shower build typically adds low-four-figures to the project once plumbing, valve, and trim are counted. It is a luxury line item — but it is the one luxury owners consistently say was worth it.

Getting the Design Right
Body spray placement is a design exercise, not just plumbing. Sprays go at torso height — roughly 40 to 48 inches off the shower floor for most adults — angled slightly inward so streams meet your body, not the glass. Two per side is the residential sweet spot; the shower stays balanced without turning into a car wash.
Trim style should match your main valve and shower head — same collection, same finish. Mixed collections look assembled from spare parts. We spec the full trim package together so everything coordinates.
